Product information "LUNT LS1.25HW 31.7mm (1.25'') Herschel Wedge"

This Herschel wedge is designed for superior White-Light solar observing and imaging. It can be used with refracting telescopes up to 102mm aperture, with 1.25'' focuser. This complete system comes with installed ND3.0 filter.

Herschel Wedges are used to observe the sun in White Light. Around 95% of the Sun's light is suppressed by the wedge's ceramic prism. The remaining sun light is dimmed further by a factory-installed ND3.0 grey filter. Lunt Solar Systems Herschel wedges are installed in a fully closed housing with integrated heat trap. No stray light can escape from this, therefore it is very safe method of observing our nearest star.

The difference between Herschel-wedges and normal front mounted filters is that the filtering takes place just before the eyepiece or camera. This provides better contrast and sharpness of the solar image - with more surface detail visible as a result. Furthermore, a Herschel wedge is inherently safer than at a front mounted filter. A Herschel wedge can not rip or become punctured like a foil filter can be and it cannot become detached from the telescope objective accidentally.

Only for use with refractor telescopes up to 102mm aperture:
Because the full energy and heat of the sun inside the telescope, we advise solely using refractors for Herschel-wedge use. The refractor must not have corrector lenses at the back. Optical elements like corrector lenses, or secondary mirrors of reflecting telescopes, could suffer from thermal build-up by concentrated solar energy and could be permanently damaged.

Tuning the brightness:

Because the Herschel-wedge produces polarised light, you can use a normal polarising filter at the eyepiece, or camera-adapter. By turning the polarising filter the image brightness can be varied to the user's liking.

This additional Polarising filter is not included. We recommend the BRESSER 1.25'' polarising filter, no: 4946464.

Safety instructions: There are certain dangers when observing the sun, regardless of the telescope used. Lunt-Solar-Systems places great emphasis on the safety of their products during manufacture. Your safety is the highest priority, and we ask that you carefully read the telescope manual before beginning solar observation. Please never disassemble the telescope! Never use it if it has been modified or damaged in any way! Always contact our customer service if you have any questions regarding the safety of your instrument. Never look at the sun with an unprotected eye or with a telescope not intended for solar observation! Never leave your telescope unattended while it is pointed at the sun! Other people who are unfamiliar with it might attempt to replace the block filter with another prism, unaware of how critical this filter is for safety. The components of Lunt-Solar-Systems telescopes are not interchangeable with those of other manufacturers. Lunt-Solar-Systems solar telescopes contain several different optical elements that have been precisely adjusted and mounted during manufacture. These systems require no maintenance. Never disassemble the telescope. Doing so will void the warranty, potentially leading to expensive repairs, and may cause future damage to your instrument, compromising your safety! Most Lunt-Solar-Systems telescopes and filters include a very sensitive optical component called an Etalon. These Etalons are built into the system to protect them as best as possible. Countless considerations have been made to ensure the best performance of this "heart" of every system, even under the daily stresses it inevitably faces, such as shocks and vibrations during transport or regular use. Nevertheless, it should never be dropped. Improper use of the telescope can damage the Etalon (not a warranty case) and render the system unusable until repaired. The instrument should always be stored in its original packaging or in the optional transport case (item number 0554010). Like any optical precision instrument, it should be stored in a dry environment. With proper care, you will enjoy your instrument for a lifetime!

Spare part for blocking-filters from LUNT SOLAR SYSTEMS, suitable for B400, B500, B600, B1200 and B1800 blocking-filters.The H-alpha telescopes and filter systems from Lunt Solar Systems each include a blocking-filter. The blocking-filters have a blue colored filter part on the side facing the telescope. This blue colored filter parts may become a milky white layer at older blocking-filters if the blocking-filter was storded at high air humidity for some time. Please always store H-alpha telescopes and filters as dry as possible. If this blue colored filter part has become a milky white layer, it can be replaced with this spare part. The replacement is easy and can be done by the user himself.
