FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

For this application we recommend the BRESSER Erudit DLX 40-1000x microscope in combination with a USB camera, e.g. the BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP. This solution offers better image quality and flexibility than a simple LCD microscope.

If you want to identify bacteria, it is usually more useful to create a culture. Microscopes are generally only sufficient to determine whether the bacteria are, for example, spherical or rod-shaped.
The Barlow lens is already installed in the eyepiece tube on many devices. It can be pulled out at the upper ridge to use the zoom function.
Possible causes:

  • Sample too thick / unsuitable: Use thin samples or fixed smears.
  • No cover glass or incorrect thickness: Objectives are optimized for cover glasses.
  • Condenser incorrectly adjusted: Do not open the diaphragm too far – otherwise contrast will be low.
  • Magnification too high: Rule of thumb: maximum 1000 × objective aperture. Example: With a 40x objective with aperture 0.65, the limit is about 650x.

Product information "BRESSER Stereo Microscope Advance ICD 10x-160x Zoom with MikroCamII 5MP HIS Microscope Camera"

Professional complete set for precise analyses and high-resolution image results: This powerful set combines the high-quality Advance ICD stereo microscope with the modern MikroCamII 5MP HIS camera and a 0.75x reduction lens. It is ideal for fine detail observations and high-resolution images, ensuring reliable documentation of your results.

The Microscope in Detail

The BRESSER Advance ICD is suitable as a zoom stereo loupe for a wide range of observations. Objects appear three-dimensional and plastic due to the Greenough design with two inclined objectives. The 3D image also makes working with tools (e.g. preparing, dissecting, soldering) much easier.
The zoom allows stepless adjustment of magnification with a zoom factor of 4.0 (1x-4x). Only minimal refocusing is needed when zooming. For this, the Advance ICD has a coaxial focus drive with coarse and fine adjustment. This allows particularly sensitive focusing at high magnifications or for photography. The fine focus is also a great aid for focus stacking, e.g. with our MikroCam cameras (optional).

The interpupillary distance is individually adjustable. Both eyepiece holders have a dioptre adjustment, allowing differences in visual acuity of up to approx. 8 dpt between the left and right eye to be compensated. The 10x widefield eyepieces with a field number of 22 are equipped with removable rubber eyecups. The microscope head can be adjusted very far in height on the stand rod. This allows observation of very large objects up to an object height of approx. 22 cm.
The bright LED incident illumination is adjustable in its tilt. The particularly even and bright LED transmitted illumination provides a homogeneous background for transmitted light specimens. The illumination can be set with a toggle switch, so incident and transmitted light can be used separately or together depending on the type of sample. You can conveniently adjust the brightness with the dimmer. The bright LED illumination produces no heat, so living samples can be safely observed over a longer period. A low-power 5V power adapter (with Euro and UK adapter) is used to power the long-lasting LED illumination. The power cable has a USB connector on one side.

The Advance ICD can be used in many ways due to the large magnification range. In addition to the included 2x auxiliary lens, further additional objectives are available, allowing you to vary and adapt the magnification range, working distance, and depth of field even further to your requirements.

These magnifications are possible in the basic configuration:
10x eyepieces: 10x - 40x
10x eyepieces plus 2x auxiliary lens: 20x - 80x
20x eyepieces: 20x - 80x
20x eyepieces plus 2x auxiliary lens: 80x - 160x

(further magnifications possible with optional additional objectives or eyepiece magnifications)

The third tube is designed for connecting a camera. A switch deflects the image from the left objective to the camera tube. Various adapters and reduction optics are available for C-mount cameras and DSLR or system cameras, so practically all cameras with removable lenses can be connected.

The Microscope Camera in Detail

The BRESSER MikroCamII 5MP HIS with the very light-sensitive and low-noise Sony(R) IMX264 sensor is excellent even under difficult lighting conditions. The camera works with a global shutter. This prevents distortions in moving objects.

If sufficient light is available, extremely short exposure times of up to 1/50,000 second can practically freeze fast movements.

The MikroCam Lab II software offers a variety of functions, such as measurement in the live image (calibration specimen required), mosaic image creation, focus stacking (for increased depth of field). Furthermore, almost all automatic functions (exposure time, sensitivity, white balance, etc.) can also be set manually.

The functions: mosaic and focus stacking (EDF) can be generated directly from the live image. This can save a lot of time.
Even if you are not a professional, you will achieve quick success. To use the mosaic function optimally, a cross table is required.

Due to the large sensor, the camera is not optimal for every microscope. Vignetting may occur in some cases. This shading is usually prevented by a 0.75x optic (item no. 5914007) screwed into the camera.

The camera is not designed for the trinocular tube of the ETD-201. Only part of the image field can be used with this microscope.
