FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

For this application we recommend the BRESSER Erudit DLX 40-1000x microscope in combination with a USB camera, e.g. the BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP. This solution offers better image quality and flexibility than a simple LCD microscope.

If you want to identify bacteria, it is usually more useful to create a culture. Microscopes are generally only sufficient to determine whether the bacteria are, for example, spherical or rod-shaped.
The Barlow lens is already installed in the eyepiece tube on many devices. It can be pulled out at the upper ridge to use the zoom function.
Possible causes:

  • Sample too thick / unsuitable: Use thin samples or fixed smears.
  • No cover glass or incorrect thickness: Objectives are optimized for cover glasses.
  • Condenser incorrectly adjusted: Do not open the diaphragm too far – otherwise contrast will be low.
  • Magnification too high: Rule of thumb: maximum 1000 × objective aperture. Example: With a 40x objective with aperture 0.65, the limit is about 650x.

Product information "BRESSER Stereo Microscope Advance ICD 10x-160x Zoom with MikroCam PRO HDMI Autofocus Microscope Camera"

High-quality complete set for precise analyses and sharp image transmission: This powerful set combines the Advance ICD stereo microscope with the advanced MikroCam PRO HDMI autofocus, as well as a 0.5x reduction lens. It is ideally suited for detailed observations and documenting work results.

The microscope in detail

The BRESSER Advance ICD is suitable as a zoom stereo loupe for a wide range of observations. Objects appear three-dimensional and plastic due to the Greenough design with two inclined objectives. The 3D image also makes working with tools (e.g. preparing, dissecting, soldering) much easier.
The zoom allows stepless adjustment of magnification with a zoom factor of 4.0 (1x-4x). Only minimal refocusing is required when zooming. For this, the Advance ICD has a coaxial focus drive with coarse and fine adjustment. This allows particularly sensitive focusing, especially at high magnifications or for photography. The fine focus is also a great aid for focus stacking, e.g. with our MikroCam cameras (optional).

The eye distance is individually adjustable. Both eyepiece holders have a dioptre adjustment, allowing differences in visual acuity of up to approx. 8 dpt between the left and right eye to be compensated. The 10x widefield eyepieces with a field number of 22 are equipped with removable rubber eyecups. The microscope head can be adjusted very far in height on the stand rod. This allows very large objects up to an object height of approx. 22 cm to be observed.
The bright LED incident light illumination is adjustable in its tilt. The particularly even and bright LED transmitted light illumination provides a homogeneous background for transmitted light specimens. The illumination can be set with a toggle switch, so incident and transmitted light can be used separately or together depending on the type of sample. You can conveniently control the brightness with the dimmer. The bright LED illumination produces no heat, so living samples can be safely observed over a longer period. A low-power 5V power adapter (with Euro and UK adapter) is used to power the long-lasting LED illumination. The power cable has a USB connector on one side.

The Advance ICD can be used in many ways due to the large magnification range. In addition to the included 2x auxiliary lens, further additional objectives are available, allowing you to vary and adapt the magnification range, working distance and depth of field even further to your requirements.

These magnifications are possible in the basic configuration:
10x eyepieces: 10x - 40x
10x eyepieces plus 2x auxiliary lens: 20x - 80x
20x eyepieces: 20x - 80x
20x eyepieces plus 2x auxiliary lens: 80x - 160x

(further magnifications possible with optional additional objectives or eyepiece magnifications)

The third tube is designed for connecting a camera. A switch deflects the image from the left objective to the camera tube. Various adapters and reduction optics are available for C-mount cameras and DSLR or system cameras, so practically all cameras with removable lenses can be connected.

The microscope camera in detail

The BRESSER MikroCam PRO HDMI Autofocus impresses with its excellent image quality combined with user-friendly operation. It delivers the microscope image live and without delay as an HDMI signal with Full HD resolution to a monitor or television. An optional 11'' HDMI monitor (Art. No. 5914110) can be mounted directly on the camera and provides brilliant and high-contrast images. Due to the very high light sensitivity, good image quality is ensured even in low light. This model is particularly recommended for darkfield or phase contrast.

The autofocus allows optimal focusing of the camera without using the microscope's focus wheels. This ensures parfocality on various trinocular microscopes. The focusable range extends from position 0, which corresponds to the C-mount distance, over focusing up to 5.4 mm forward, which also reaches the CS-mount distance, and additionally up to 10.6 mm inward to cover an even larger range. Besides autofocus, the camera can also be manually focused via mouse. Focus adjustment to a specific area is also possible.

The camera functions are operated via mouse directly on the on-screen menu. Measurements can be performed via the on-screen menu, turning your microscope with the MikroCam Pro HDMI Autofocus into a fully functional digital measuring microscope.

The MikroCam PRO HDMI Autofocus offers a wide range of applications, including:
  • Documentation
  • Evaluation
  • Analysis
  • Presentation
  • Quality control
  • Automation
  • Machine vision
This makes the MikroCam PRO Autofocus an excellent industrial camera with a very good price-performance ratio.

Additionally, the camera can provide the microscope view in a wireless network via a WiFi module. When connected via HDMI, images and videos can be recorded directly on an SD card (not included). However, a USB connection to the PC is no longer provided for this model. For this, we recommend the MikroCam Pro HDMI 5914180 model.

Due to the global shutter, no image distortions occur during movement. The large image sensor (14.13 x 7.45 mm) provides a very large field of view. The very high light sensitivity of the Sony® IMX305 CMOS sensor enables very good image quality even in dark field or phase contrast. The BRESSER MikroCam Lab II software offers a variety of functions, such as measurement in the live image (calibration specimen required), mosaic creation, focus stacking (for increased depth of field). Furthermore, almost all automatic functions (exposure time, sensitivity, white balance, etc.) can also be set manually. The functions: mosaic and focus stacking (EDF) can be generated directly from the live image. This can save a lot of time.Even if you are not a professional, you can achieve quick success. To optimally use the mosaic function, a cross table is required.Due to the large sensor, the camera is not optimally suited for every microscope. There may be edge shading (vignetting) in this case. This shading is usually prevented by a 1x optic (Art. No. 5914001) that is screwed into the camera. For the trinocular tube of the ETD-201, this camera is not designed. In this microscope, not the entire part of the image field can be used.FEATURES OF THE MICROSCOPE CAMERAModern Sony® IMX305 sensor 14.13mm x 7.45 mm (1'')8.85 MP resolution (4096x2160 pixels)Many software functions, such as measurement, focus stacking (for overlaying multiple recordings, for increased depth of field), mosaic (for displaying larger image fields)Image and video recording, including time-lapse function4K videos at up to 30 fpsVery large field of view in the microscopeHigh-quality metal housingGood compatibility with various microscopesC-mount thread: for easy adaptability, also suitable for C-mount objectives1/4'' tripod thread, e.g., for a photo tripodHigh-speed USB 3.0 connectionSYSTEM REQUIREMENTSWindows 10 or 11Intel i3, i5, i7 or i9 processor from 6th generation orAMD Ryzen processorOptical drive or internet connection for software downloadUSB 3.0, 3.1SCOPE OF DELIVERY OF THE MICROSCOPE CAMERACamera headUSB 3.0 cable23.2 mm adapter, 30 mm and 30.5 mmRecording and image processing software (for Windows)
